Lee's Testimonial

I have had the incredible opportunity to volunteer at Imagine Community Gardens at the Garden Church for the past three years, and it has been a transformative experience.

I work as an Occupational Therapy Practitioner at the local psychiatric hospital, and I have had the opportunity to support out-patient clients as they learn how to garden and be a part of this beautiful community. This garden is more than just an urban farm- it has become a sanctuary for healing, growth and community.

The garden is a vibrant tapestry of colors and scents, filled with a variety of flowers, vegetables and herbs. Each visit feels like stepping into a peaceful retreat, where nature’s beauty can uplift spirits and foster a sense of belonging. Working alongside individuals who are navigating mental health challenges has been profoundly rewarding. The act of gardening- digging, planting and nurturing- has proven therapeutic, helping them to reconnect with themselves and the world around them.

Through hands-on development, many of these individuals have gained confidence and developed new skills. I’ve witnessed first-hand how tending to the garden can spark joy and a sense of purpose. The physical activity involved promotes well-being, while the social interactions help build friendships and support networks that extend beyond the garden.

Imagine Community Gardens has created a welcoming environment where everyone feels included. From donating to the less fortunate, to uplifting community events like “Kid’s Planting Day” and “Potluck Garden Delights,” the community has been enriched by this garden. Passers by stop and admire and some even join- which is crucial for fostering independence.

The garden also serves as a platform for community engagement. Events like “Kid’s Flower Day” and “Meet the Chef Day” bring people together, creating a strong sense of camaraderie. It’s heartwarming to see participants take pride in their contributions, whether it’s sharing fresh produce or simply enjoying a meal together.

It’s a remarkable place that not only beautifies the neighborhood but also changes lives. It has been an honor to be a part of this journey, helping individuals thrive and gain independence through the power of gardening. If you’re looking for a place to connect, learn and grow, this garden is truly a gem.
